So many of the things we now take for granted were once considered feats of amazing strength and marvels of modern engineering. Esther Greenfield’s new book, Tough Men in Hard Places, offers a glimpse into the lives of men who braved avalanches, winter storms and daunting terrain to bring electricity and power to parts of the Southwest at the turn of the last century. We’re sharing a sampling of the photos in her book, but you can see more at Center of Southwest Studies in Durango, Colorado, where an exhibit based on the book is running through Sept. 18.
