With thousands of miles of rivers and more than 2,000 lakes, Colorado fishing is some of the best in the country. Paired with the state’s natural beauty, it’s pretty much a dream destination.
Here are a few spots to try:
The Charlie Meyers State Wildlife Area is so plentiful, it’s been dubbed the dream stream. The hot spot is on the South Platte River between Spinney Mountain State Park and Eleven Mile State Park, east of Hartsel.
The high-mountain Blue Lakes north of Telluride are bluer than the Caribbean and full of native cutthroat trout. The nearby Gunnison Gorge, Taylor River and Blue Mesa Reservoir near Gunnison are popular destinations for anglers, too.
Southeastern Colorado may just be the state’s best-kept fishing secret. Lake Meredith and John Martin Reservoir near La Junta are great spots to cast a line, but this region’s best asset may be the Arkansas River, which really picks up steam with thousands of acre-feet of fisherman-friendly water.
